A Review of Trippie Redd's "A Love Letter To You 3"

A Review of Trippie Redd's "A Love Letter To You 3"

Fresh off his debut album "LIFE'S A TRIP," Ohio rapper Trippie Redd adds more music to his 2018 discography with "A Love Letter To You 3." I enjoyed "LIFE'S A TRIP" a lot simply because some of the songs were unexpected. For Trippie Redd to have an album that fits together with "Together" (no pun intended) which was a country song, "How You Feel" a rock song, Wish featuring Diplo a pop song and obviously hip-hop songs was something that I found to be super impressive. Now we turn to "A Love Letter to You 3" which over the span of seven songs has a total of eight features among the total 16 songs on the project. One of those songs being the only single released for this project titled "Topanga" which has a bit of a pop feel to the beat with of course the presence Trippie Redd can bring to a song. Emani22, Kodie Shane, Baby Goth, Youngboy Never Broke Again, Nel-Denarro, Juice WRLD, Tory Lanez and Elliott Trent all have features on this album. Based on the track list, this once again seems to be a great project, so without further ado, let's get to the review. 👂🏾

Scale

Per song
+.5 for beat selection
+.5 for flow
+.5 for content/impact
+.5 for hit value

Points will be taken off for:
Fatigue in listening
Lack of diversity in beats

Raw Score: The amount of good songs on a project versus the overall amount. Songs must have a +1 or above to be counted.

Quality Score: The total amount of points accumulated over the total amount of songs.

Playback value: The resonance an album is perceived to have if played again in full. Scale out of 5.

Topanga
The lone single off this project. This ChopsquadDJ beat comprised of a high paced high hat along with signing with a high pitch, bass and piano works to set a calm vibe for this song. Although, there is a calm vibe the high hats give a fast-paced vibe. The fast flow Trippie Redd uses complies with the fast-paced high hats. As always, the Trippie Redd vocals are on point.
+1

Fire Starter (ft. Emani 22)
The bassline established a dark vibe within this beat. The pace of this song is slow with Trippie Redd singing the hooks and rapping his verse at a slow tempo. The high hats and other instruments are used by Da Honorable C.N.O.T.E. a slow pace as well. The song ends with what seems to be Emani 22 singing in the background. Harmonizing may be the better word, simply because the lyrics are inaudible.
+1

Toxic Waste
A relatively quiet song for Trippie Redd. A piano and "drip" starts off the song before the beat produced by Diplo and King Henry drops for Trippie Redd's first verse. The beat has a contrast in bass that switches back and forth with a "snap." The song ends with the high-pitched voice, similar to the voice we heard on "Topanga" singing "fuck it." On this song Trippie sings "fuck my life" with that voice singing "fuck it" as the adlib. This song also has a slow pace to it comparable to the pace of "Fire Starter."
+1

Negative Energy (ft. Kodie Shane)
The first instrument heard on this Staccato beat is a structured slow tempo bass before the high hats come in midway through Trippie Redd's first verse. The Trippie Redd verses are solid but, the best verse on this song is Kodie Shane's verse which serves as the third verse.
+1

Can't Love
The acoustic guitar is a nice touch added by OZ on this beat also composed of a structured bass and fast paced high hats. Within the hook, there's a nice play on the game where someone picks a flower, picking the pedals off the flower alternating between "he/she loves me... he/she loves me not." Trippie Redd sings,
"She say she love me, I think she love me not
She say she love me, I know she love me not"
The main idea of this, like the whole songs is the girls in Trippie Redd's life claim to love him but, he realizes he's only "loved" for what he has, not who he is. Trippie picked a nice beat to flow on with an interesting way to word the message he's trying to get across.
+1.5

Love Scars 3

The high paced high hats with the slow-paced bass with some piano in the background creates an up-tempo feel to this OZ beat. Trippie's vocals on this beat are great on this song.

+1

A.L.L.T.Y. 3 (ft. Baby Goth)
The "boosh" sound serves as an inverted bass of sort. This combined with a calm piano, guitar rifts and high hats makes for a good beat put together by OZ and Dez Wright. Trippie Redd's performance on this song is average for him compared to his performance on "A Love Letter To You 2." Baby Goth's cadence sounds one of a baby voice, which actually works on this song.
+1

Emani Interlude (ft. Emani 22)
The dark baseline along with that "drip" sound works with the high hats on this OZ beat in collaboration with Tariq beats and Foreign Teck. Not much of Trippie Redd on this song besides the outro where he appears to be cursing out his ex over the phone. That gives way for Emani 22's vocals to shine, which they do throughout this song.
+1

Elevate & Motivate (ft. Youngboy Never Broke Again & Nel-Denarro)
This trumpet, and piano filled beat made by OZ and Krischordz works with a dark baseline. The first verse with Youngboy Never Broke Again and Trippie Redd each sharing half of the verse is a great verse. However, the song loses momentum during the second verse rapped by Nel-Denarro. The Trippie Redd hook on this song helps the song to finish strong which it does, however a bit disappointing that it didn't finish as strong as it could.
+1

I Tried Loving
The way the beat comes in when Trippie Redd's vocals come in has the same impact as Future's vocals on the song "Astronauts" with Juice WRLD off their joint project "Future & Juice WRLD Present WRLD On Drugs." The beat produced by Icon South is a simple one comprised of altered high hats and a bass that alters at points throughout the beat.
This song has some hit value to it to pair with the great Trippie Redd vocals and great beat.
+1.5

Wicked
Like "I Tried Loving," Trippie Redd once again comes in with the beat which captures the audience's attention. A simple beat made by OZ with a structured high hat and heavy bass that doesn't hit often but stays for a long time. Once again the hook on this song along with the great beat and fire Trippie Redd vocals works to create another song with a hit feeling.
+1.5

Loyalty Before Royalty
This beat once again made by OZ, in collaboration with Rex Kudo, is a more complex beat made with a fast paced bass, high hats and altered drum which comes in a slower pace. On this song we get another feel of a hit with Trippie Redd singing his heart out over the course of two hooks and one verse.
+1.5

1400 / 999 Freestyle (ft. Juice WRLD)
This song starts off with a calm piano before the Juice WRLD chorus comes in with the fast-paced bass and high hats created by OZ and Pas Beatz. Both verses, the first by Juice WRLD and the second by Trippie Redd are great verses. The Juice WRLD hook is a catchy one although it is a long hook.
+1.5

So Alive
A callback to the first three songs of this project going back to a slower paced vibe.
Made by Nellz and Goose the Guru, this slow paced but heavy high hat beat with a slow structured bass works with Trippie Redd's slow flow. The distorted sound in the beat towards the end of the song works well for this slow vibe as well. On this song Trippie Redd once again sings about his obsession with the current girl on his mind.
+1

Diamond Minds (ft. Elliot Trent &Tory Lanez)
This song follows a similar song structure present on the song "Red Bentley" by Juice WRLD & Future featuring Young Thug. The song structure has the three rappers’ verses back to back to back, but the difference is in this song there is no hook compared to "Red Bentley" where the hook sandwiches the three verses. On this song with the beat made by 809-H and Trent Elliott, there's a heavy bass that hits with another bass that hits with more frequency during the first bass. There’s a slow high hat that hits with the hats as well. All verses are solid, but the first from Trippie Redd, the second from Elliott Trent but, verse that blows me away is the Tory Lanez verse that ends the song.
+1

Camp Fire Tale
The final song on this project. We get an acoustic guitar with a heavy bass in the background of this song produced by We Are The Stars. This song has a darker yet calmer feel comparable to "How You Feel" off Trippie Redd's debut album "LIFE'S A TRIP" A nice way to close out this project.
+1

Trippie Redd's "A Love Letter To You 3"

Raw Score: 16/16
Quality Score: 18.5/16
Playback Value: 4/5

Overall "A Love Letter To You 3" is a great follow up to "LIFE'S A TRIP." On "LIFE'S A TRIP" we got some experimental songs such as "Together" and "How You Feel," but on "A Love Letter To You 3" we get some songs like "Toxic Waste" and "Fire Starter" featuring Emani 22. With that being said, this project feels a lot like A Love Letter To You 2 in the beginning. The five song run from "Elevate & Motivate" featuring Youngboy Never Broke Again & Nel-Denarro and "1400 / 999 Freestyle" featuring Juice WRLD is one of the best runs on a project Trippie Redd has had. Every song within that run has hit potential of some sort. My three standout songs are "I Tried Loving," "Wicked" and "1400 / 999 Freestyle" featuring Juice WRLD, all three songs come from that run I mentioned earlier. Trippie Redd stays hot with this project and once again establishes his place in the game. Go stream Trippie Redd's "A Love Letter To You 3" today on your favorite streaming platform.
