A Review of Takeoff's "The Last Rocket"

A Review of Takeoff's "The Last Rocket"

Take-Takeoff! Takeoff the Migos appointed best Migo comes next in line in a series of solo projects from the Migos. This project titled "The Last Rocket" is the first project we are getting from Takeoff minus the Migos. This album has been anticipated simply because of Takeoff's rapping ability. The way he can speed up the tempo on songs such as "Deadz" which featured 2 Chainz and "Drip" by Cardi B featuring the Migos has may listeners licking their chops at the sight of a Takeoff solo album. The first and only single off this project titled "Last Memory" was a fairly solid song that didn't really impact feelings of the coming project. This project has a total of twelve tracks with no listed features on it. It'll be interesting to see how well Takeoff can put a song together by himself. Now, without further ado, let's get to the review! 👂🏾

Martian
The start of this song goes along with the title of this album "The Last Rocket" as we hear what seems to be a countdown sequence along with other maintenance terms used for a rocket. The beat produced by DJ Durel is a soft bass with a high paced high hats and faint brass instrument in the background. The verse Takeoff spits is a solid one as well as the hooks.
+1

She Gon Wink (ft. Quavo)
A seamless transition from the last song to this one. This song once again starts with an announcement of destination of the rocket. This once again DJ Durel beat, has a soft slow bass with an electronic wind instrument in the background. The first verse, spit by Takeoff is solid, the hook and second verse performed by Quavo is also solid.
+1

None To Me
This 808 Mafia beat, gives us a different vibe compared to the first two songs. The bass is a soft but piercing and the high hats are soft and fast. There's only one Takeoff verse on this song however, it's solid. The flow and beat selection contribute to making this a good song.
+1

Vacation
Another seamless transition from the end of "None To Me" to this song. This beat, produced by Murda Beatz is a more up-tempo beat with the fast-paced bass drops, piano and high hats. The flow switch between the first and second verses show Takeoff's talent with the multiple ways he can rap.
+1

Last Memory
The only single coming from this project. Produced by Monstabeatz, this beat is comprised of a humming sound, a normal bass and a normal tempo with the high hats. This song once again only has one verse sandwiched between two hooks, a similar song structure to "Martian" and "None To Me." Once again, a solid verse and a great beat choice for Takeoff's delivery style.
+1

I Remember
This is the catchiest hook on the project so far.
"I remember, I remember, I remember (I)
I remember, I remember, I remember (I remember that)
I can't forget, I can't forget, I can't forget it (I can't forget)
I remember, I remember, I remember (Remember that)
I remember, I remember, I remember (Yes I remember)
I remember, I remember, I remember (Oh, I remember)
I can't forget it, can't forget it, can't forget it (Never forget)
I remember, I remember, I remember (I remember)"
It's very clear that Takeoff still remembers. This mellow banger produced by Murda Beatz has a fast pace to it in the flow Takeoff uses and the high hats, bass and crashing sounds put together by Murda. Overall, this song is one of the stand outs to me thus far.
+1

Lead The Wave
The first verse is an example of Takeoff's rapping ability as he changes his flow at least two times before the end of the first verse. On the second Takeoff lays some logic on his listeners with the lines,
"I stopped and got fast food for my teacher
He said I wouldn't make it (Hi)
But ain't got no bad heart
So I saw him, said, "Congratulations" (Bye)
Why do what he want me to do
When I'm in the position, I made it (Now why would I do that?)"
Here Takeoff raps about proving people wrong and not feeding into the negativity they pushed towards you. This DJ Durel beat has a soft bass with a slow-paced high hat and adjusted piano in the background. Overall, a solid song.
+1

Casper
A mellow beat comprised of a flute, piano, high hats and a soft bass produced by 808 Mafia and Cassius Jay. This beat mixed with Takeoff's mellow delivery makes a mellow song.
+1

Insomnia
A different vibe compared to "Casper." This Buddah Bless beat is high paced with fast high hats, a moderately heavy and fast bass, and a fast-paced flute. The flow used by Takeoff is also one of his faster flows.
+1

Infatuation (ft. Daytona Fox)
A love song from Takeoff? Daytona Fox gives us the first verse and hook before Takeoff gives us a second verse. Both are about what they want to do and how they feel about whoever they are talking about. The slow jam beat comprised of a structured tempo in the high hat and bass was produced by Masked Man. This is a successful step out of the box for Takeoff.
+1

Soul Plane
This Cassius Jay beat reminds me of the Ugly God beat off his song "Stop Smoking Black & Milds." The tempo of the bass sounds almost identical between the two songs. This Cassius Jay beat is obviously comprised with bass and a faint high hat. The fast-paced flow of Takeoff fits well with this bass heavy beat.
+1

Bruce Wayne
The outro track on this 12-song album. Cassius Jay slows it down to end this album with a slow bass and high hat with a slow triangle and piano in the background. The first verse raps about a different topic compared to the second and third. The first talks about moments when Takeoff was nervous, the second and third verses talk about his lifestyle now. The outro once again connects the title of the album with the same voice talking about the hard work put into making sure the rocket is successful. That rocket can also be translated to be Takeoff's career.

Takeoff's "The Last Rocket"

Raw Score: 12/12
Quality Score: 12/12
Playback Value: 3/5

Overall, a solid debut album from Takeoff. Takeoff did a nice job of making sure the album flowed and carried a consistent vibe for the most part. Of course, the flow and adlibs performed by Takeoff were on point as well. Looking back on the album it, turns out that Takeoff included features from Quavo on "She Gon Wink" and Daytona Fox on the interesting song "Infatuation." My three standout songs on this album are "I Remember," "Lead The Wave," and "Infatuation" featuring Daytona Fox. While there wasn’t much done from Takeoff that we didn’t expect, “The Last Rocket” is still a solid album comprised of the skill we already knew Takeoff to have.
