‘Three Dimensions Deep’ Showcases the Depths of Amber Mark’s Voice

With this week being a quiet one on the Hip-Hop album front, I think it’s a good opportunity for me to write about one of my favorite non-Hip-Hop albums of the year, Amber Mark’s Three Dimensions Deep. I’ve been a fan of Amber Mark for years, first encountering her music in 2017 when she released 3:33am. The impressive range of her vocals and great ear for beats quickly encapsulated me with tracks like ‘Regret’ and ‘Way Back’ providing some solid examples of her abilities as a singer. Her next EP, Conexão, Amber Mark continued to demonstrate her skills solidifying herself as one of my favorite singers.

I’m an avid enthusiast for listening and appreciating quality projects and loose singles don’t do much to hold me over during the wait for a new compilation of tracks sequenced in a careful way for the best listening experience possible. So with Amber Mark releasing singles in the nearly four-year span between Conexão and Three Dimensions Deep, I occasionally went back to listen to her previous EPs with hopes that her next project was around the corner. It was a long but eventually rewarding wait as Three Dimensions Deep has everything I loved from Amber Mark’s previous EPs.

I’m someone who can get bored easily. As much as I love music, sometimes the concept of sitting down and listening to a compilation of new songs for forty minutes or more can be a daunting one. The task becomes increasingly daunting when I step outside of my Hip-Hop bubble because what if I don’t like what I’m listening to? Each project I listen to should get a fair chance to win me over, so I sometimes struggle to finish projects from any genre. With this being established, any artist that can make a project that is over 30 minutes and keep my attention all the way through has my respect. With Three Dimensions Deep, Amber Mark can now add herself to the list of artists who have accomplished that feat.

Throughout my time listening to music, I’ve found that the one thing that never fails to keep me engaged is versatility. If you can deliver music in a multifaceted approach while still making an album cohesive you can command my music listening diet for at least a week. On Three Dimensions Deep, Amber Mark successfully combines a smorgasbord of sounds to show the versatility of her voice and other fundamental musical talents.

Track three on Amber Mark’s Three Dimensions Deep, ‘Most Men’ is centered around the concept of heartbreak. Throughout the track, Amber Mark sings about the feeling of loving someone more than they love her and being cheated on. Amber Mark illustrates her point by singing, “Oh, you would give him all, 'cause when he looks at you with lust, the way that he's looking, oh, it is enough, girl, you're so reckless with your heart” and “cut that player out of your life, most men are trifling, don't understand what wifing is.” Amber Mark delivers this message in a way that explores the different depths of her voice over an organ-driven melody.

‘Bubbles’ serves as track five on Three Dimensions Deep. Track five is a great example of the range of Amber Mark’s beat selection, as she places her vocals on top of this afrobeat melody. Once again Amber Mark demonstrates the brilliant control of her voice by selecting the right cadence to use for the duration of the track.

Track twelve on Amber Mark’s debut album ‘Cosmic’ is another example of the versatility she shows throughout the album. On this track, she drags the last syllables of each line to display the beauty of her voice. Additionally, the way Amber Mark delivers the chorus of this song is a thing of beauty as she strikes the right tone and tempo, making the song resonate.

‘Event Horizon,’ the outro track on Amber Mark’s Three Dimensions Deep is my favorite track on the album. The seventeenth track doesn’t have many lyrics but provides the best display of the range Amber Mark’s voice has. Throughout the track Amber Mark harmonizes with the beautiful piano melody, creating an out-of-body experience that easily connects with the listener. ‘Event Horizon’ is the perfect display of her raw talent, allowing listeners to get lost in her voice and enjoy the nearly four-minute experience.

With Three Dimensions Deep, Amber Mark solidifies herself as one of the up-and-coming artists everybody should have their eyes on. The range of her voice paired with the precision of how she chooses to exercise it is nothing short of a masterclass, providing her with a great foundation for her to continue to develop her talent. Three Dimensions Deep will definitely stay in my music rotation for a while and I’m excited to hear what is next from Amber Mark.
